The Pep Boys Management and Leadership Development Programs set associates up for success in a variety of management positions. The first level, Management Development Program (MDP), is geared towards preparing participants for a retail or service management position. Pep Boys’ Leadership Development Program (LDP) is focused on preparing participants for multi-unit management accountability – for example, as an area director with responsibility for multiple stores. Both programs are six weeks in duration supported by instructor-led classroom training, online courses, simulations and case studies, Web conference group discussions, mentoring and on-the-job learning opportunities and special assignments.
Targeted Development Plans
Both eLearning and instructor-led training are offered via Pep Boys’ Learning Management System. “Learning Central” by name, it organizes most courses into role-based Targeted Development Plans (TDP). Example of TDP can be found here.
Guided by those plans, associates complete courses that focus on how to deliver exceptional customer service while also developing their skills and expertise in various areas. In addition, short monthly courses serve as reminders that in-store and driving safety are of paramount importance. Categories of learning include onboarding, product knowledge, automotive theory and practice and Pep Boys-specific systems. Besides our extensive online course offering, Pep Boys also has a dedicated training staff to provide instructor-led training. Our highly qualified trainers hold classes on a variety of topics including automotive technical skills, new systems releases, operational business proficiency and leadership development.
Our technical training program assists our service teams in learning as much about cars as possible, because we expect our associates to demonstrate our guiding principles when taking care of our customers and their cars: be friendly, do it right, show compassion and keep promises. Our technicians and mechanics are encouraged and rewarded for obtaining certifications from the Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Pep Boys will pay for ASE registration and test fees, as well as test-taking time, for associates with passing grades. We also offer free online study guides for the A1-A9, C1, G1, L1, P2 and X1 tests.
Advanced Technical Training
Each quarter Pep Boys offers an exciting array of courses on hot automotive topics to its service bay staff. Internal and external experts collaborate to deliver curriculums rich with e-learning, webinars and instructor-led hands-on practice. A list of Advanced Technical Training topics can be found here.
Professional and Personal Development
For our associates’ continued career and personal growth, Learning Central offers a large library of optional courses. Topics range from leadership skills to time, change and stress management; communication skills, career planning, financials, information technology, and Microsoft Office.
